A fourth-generation Tallahassee Native, founder Mat Tharpe brings an elevated level of expertise and professionalism to every project he serves in the Big Bend area. With more than two decades experience (leading Tharpe Construction for over 10 years), Mat engages a trusted network of subcontractors to deliver superior quality results in a variety of construction projects.

A devoted member of the community, Mat is active in local non-profit foundations throughout the community and resides in Tallahassee with his wife, Jess, and their two children.

He is licensed as a general contractor in his home state of Florida.

When we purchased a 30-year-old home, we needed to modify the outdoor space to make it fit our lifestyle. As a family of six with four athletic kids, we decided to add a screened-in porch with an outdoor kitchen and to expand our pool deck. After asking friends who had done similar renovations, we chose Tharpe Construction upon hearing that Mat’s quality of work is excellent. We repeatedly heard that Mat comes in on-time and he comes in on-budget – both of which were really important to us. Mat was always responsive and did a good job managing our expectations. All of his sub-contractors were fantastic and were great at anticipating problems and suggesting solutions. Tharpe Construction & Remodeling will always be the construction company we use. Mat is very knowledgeable and provided a lot of insight in designing my family's pavilion. We had an issue with the county regarding runoff during the permitting phase of construction, and he communicated often with the inspectors and kept us apprised of the situation. He also made sure that we were well informed on the workmen's schedules during the building process. Mat Tharpe is very thorough, the job site was kept clean, and the completion of the project was earlier than stated. He kept within the proposed budget, and we absolutely love the finished project!! Initially, we planned to buy something on the market and renovate it. But we chose to build when we lost a bid on a house we were excited about. We love living in the Betton Hills area and knew we didn’t want to move far, so when this lot became available just blocks from our current house, we decided to jump on it. Mat renovated our previous home and we trust him, so when it came time for us to build this new house, we didn’t talk to anybody else. Every time we meet with Mat, he is extraordinarily responsive, very straightforward, and tells us what we need to hear - not necessarily what we want to hear. As we move through each stage of the building process, Mat helps us prioritize the decisions we need to make in order to keep the ball moving forward. The subcontractors that Mat has recruited have an impressive work ethic. Everyone is incredibly professional, and they’re always on time. Mat is great at maintaining consistent progress, and even when we experience rain delays, his contractors make up for lost time on the weekends. You can’t go wrong with Mat. As we grew into the house, we realized our space wasn’t as functional as we’d like for a family. We had a small, cramped kitchen, which blocked off the dining room. We opted to renovate the space that was previously the kitchen and dining room so we’d have plenty of room to gather as a family. We didn’t know Mat when we did our first two renovations, so this was the first time we’d worked with him. We had 3 bids for the renovation and we were comfortable with Mat and his timeline. He’s very talented, but more importantly he was a great listener. He showed us ways to preserve what we already had - to marry the old with the new. Because of this, we were able to keep a built-in that was original to the house (built in 1920!). He helped us design a space that was comfortable, but true to the character of the home. Mat suggested custom cabinetry and helped us maximize our storage space, which in an old house, is at a premium. Ultimately, Mat transformed our kitchen into a functional space for our family, and he changed the way we live for the better. Beth Corum

When we were building, we really wanted a layout that would work well for our family. This layout is extremely functional – our three boys have a playroom upstairs for all their toys, but their rooms are on the main level so we can stay close. We worked with designer Jennifer Boland, owner of Home Proper Interiors, along with Mat, and we are extremely happy with the results. Our screened-in porch and pool deck feel like a natural extension of our living area because we installed a sliding glass wall just off the living room. On nice days, we can pull the wall open and the boys can come and go as they please. We believe the three most important things about a contractor are that they’re punctual, responsive, and organized. Mat is all three of those things, and was throughout the entire process. He gave us a schedule and stuck to it. The building process took roughly 9 months, and we’ve been in the house for about a year and a half now.
